We each experience the world in our own unique way. We are all at different stages of growth, with different ways of understanding, expressing ourselves, and building relationships. How can we create shared spaces where these differences are welcomed, valued, and included?

Leanna demonstrate determination and perseverance as she challenges herself to climb over the obstacle. This cross-body challenge requires her to coordinate both sides of her body, shift her weight across the midline, and use her balance, strength, and motor planning skills to navigate the equipment.
Are we not all like Leanna? When the hill is steep and the journey feels challenging, it can be tempting to stop or turn back. Yet, growth often comes from taking one step at a time,  trying different approaches, and trusting that persistence will carry us forward. Like Leanna, we discover that every challenge is an opportunity to build confidence, resilience, and new skills.
Like Luka, who describes sweeping the gravel back to the gravel area as "hard work," we are reminded that meaningful achievements often require effort and perseverance. Even though the task is physically demanding, Luka continues with determination, carefully sweeping the gravel until is is returned to its place.
Anthony, on another occasion, realized that some conversations are silent. His friend Fia approaches him and, instead of speaking, uses her hands to communicate. Through her gestures, she expresses her interest in borrowing one of Anthony's cars. To make the arrangement more appealing, she offers one of her own cars as part of the negotiation, proposing a trade in exchange for borrowing his. Anthony watches her carefully. understanding the meaning behind her silent communication as as the discussion unfolds without a single spoken word.
When I Smile: A Book of Kindness by Jo Witek offers a gentle invitation to explore these questions with friends. Through simple, heartfelt storytelling, the book shows that a smile is much more that a facial expression.
It encourages conversations about empathy, belonging, and the many ways we communicate care, reminding us that even small acts of kindness can strengthen relationships and build a more inclusive community.
When asked what kindness means, Rebecca thoughtfully shares, "Kindness means smiling and playing." Her simple yet meaningful words remind us that kindness is often expressed through everyday actions. A smile can help someone feel welcomed, while inviting others to play creates opportunities for friendship, belonging, and connection.

Rebecca's understanding highlights that acts of kindness do not have to be grand. Through smiling, sharing, and including others in play, we learn to build caring relationships and contribute to a community where everyone feels valued and included.
When asked whether our smiles can sometimes be a way of showing bravery, Emily thinks for a moment before answering. "When I am a grown-up and I am scared of something, I try to be brave," she shares. Her words suggests that a smile can sometimes be more than as expression of happiness. It can also be a quiet sign of courage in the face of fear.
As she continues speaking, Emily's expression changes. Her eyes widen, her shoulders tense, and she demonstrates what it feels like to be frightened. Even as she acts out that overwhelming fear, she explains that trying to smile can be a way of finding courage. Through her words and expressions, she shows that bravery is not the absence of fear but the decision to face it despite feeling scared.
Rebecca, on the other hand, demonstrates that a smile can carry a different meaning. With a playful grin and a mischievous sparkle in her eyes, she shows how a smile can express cheekiness rather than happiness or bravery. Her expression suggests that she knows exactly what she is doing, using her smile to tease those around her in a light-hearted and affectionate way. Rebecca's example highlights that the same facial expression can communicate different emotions and intentions depending on the context.
"Hey, my mommy is out here, and she is cleaning the lawn," Luka says clearly. His comment offers another perspective on the meaning of a smile. By drawing attention to his mother's presence, he suggests that smiles can be sometimes reflect carefulness or a sense of precaution. He explains that when meeting a stranger, a person may smile to appear friendly while remaining cautious. In this situation, the smile is not simply an expression of happiness but a thoughtful social gesture of the unfamiliar situation. Luka's example shows that smiles can also communicate careful judgement and consideration, depending on the context.
When it is Anthony's turn, he carefully spells the letters in the word smile. "S-M-I-L-E." As he says each letter, he takes his time, concentrating on the sequence and proudly completing the spelling. His participation adds another way of exploring the idea of a smile, focusing on the word itself and demonstrating his growing confidence with letters and language.
When we take photographs of our smiles, we can use them as references to draw the shapes of our faces and capture our smiling expressions. Through this process, we learn to observe our facial features closely and outline the unique shapes that make each smile our own.
As we continue exploring smiles as expressions, we can deepen our understanding by recognizing that smiles can communicate many different feelings, intentions, and relationships.
Through stories, mirror play, dramatic play, photography, and conversations, we are encouraged to observe facial expressions, wonder about what others may be feeling, and discover that a smile can express joy, kindness, excitement, gratitude, or friendship.
These experiences foster empathy, emotional literacy, perspective-taking, and meaningful social connections while helping us appreciate that every person's expression is unique and can tell a story.
To help internalize the idea of a smile, we create a wax-resist watercolour painting of the word SMILE. Writing the word in wax and then painting over it allows the letters to gradually emerge, creating a visual reminder that smiles can become more visible as we recognize our role in expressing emotion and building connection. The art learning experience encourages us to reflect on the meaning of smiling while engaging with it in a creative and memorable way.
Dancing with music is one of the ways of expressing ourselves. We are jumping along with the music called "Seven Jumps". Sharing the movements makes us want to do it together. Friends start taking their hands naturally, and holding them while we are dancing. Luka is dancing with Kaho, moving his feet up and down. He has a smile on his face with his bright eyes. His facial expression and especially, his eyes are speaking louder what he is feeling than what his body movements can express with the music. Through the dancing together, we are not only enjoying the movements but also sharing our smile, our laugh, and our feelings.
Emily gracefully participates in the music and movement learning experience, demonstrating her ability to move in sync with the rhythm sticks while following the song Blowin' in the Wind. She maintains her focus, responds well to the beat and tempo, and shows developing coordination through her controlled movements, Emily's active participation and enjoyment reflects her growing in confidence in expressing herself through music and movement.
Smiles are one of the first ways we express our feelings, and Emily's bright smile beautifully reflects her joy and confidence throughout. Her smile shows that she feels engaged, comfortable, and connects with those around her. Through her facial expressions, she communicates her excitement, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment without needing words. Emily's positive expressions not only reflects her own enjoyment but also contributes to a warm and encouraging learning environment, reminding us that a simple is a powerful way to share emotions and build meaningful connections with others.
Kindest,
Children & Friends.
